3 Huge Lies Change Leaders Tell Themselves
Look, I’m not calling you a liar but… we all have blind spots.
Today I’m sharing 3 huge lies that I see change leaders telling themselves all.the.time. Think these won’t apply to you? Stick with me - I bet you’ll be surprised.
I’ve seen leaders at all levels, working with a range of different clients, unknowingly demonstrate these success-killers.
If you’re a change leader who wants to drive genuine change or transformation across the organisation, telling yourself these lies (inadvertently, of course!) or being in denial about this stuff can screw everything up.
The 3 big lies I’m breaking down in this week’s episode of The New Way are particularly sneaky and can set the scene for total disaster. BUT the good news is that these mindset roadblocks (and the behaviours, decisions and shitty outcomes they lead to) are entirely preventable.
So don’t stress if you see yourself in any of these situations. There’s plenty you can do to turn things around and in this episode, I share some really practical things you can start doing now to get back on track.
In this ep I share:
A powerful prompt you can use to easily connect with your employees
A promise you should never make (because you won’t be able to keep it)
Why you should welcome negative feedback with open arms
Take a listen now. I hope this episode gives you some food for thought this weekend!
TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:
[3:25]: #1: Being strong is better than being real
Being real and vulnerable with employees helps to nurture a culture of creativity and courage
[5:12]: In the workplace, we’re looking for authenticity, which is vulnerability with boundaries. Share the reservations you had about the change, what came up for you and how you dealt with it.
[6:50]: #2: You’ll catch up in the next stage and still have the change adopted on time
Change takes time. If things are running behind, get the change team to plan for and deliver an early momentum as soon as possible.
[9:50]: #3: You know what the business needs, wants or thinks
If you’re telling yourself this lie, you will likely become more focussed on delegating tasks as opposed to co-creating the change with employees and stakeholders.
[12:45]: Task your change team with getting to the bottom of concerns that employees have as quickly as possible so you have the full picture
[14:00]: Wrap up
