How To Support Your People Through Organisational Change With Coaching with Colin Beattie

Do you genuinely support your employees through the organisational change or transformation program?

I’m not just talking about the key events you might host on deployment day and big milestones you track along the change journey.

Instead, my question is about how you support your people in the quiet everyday moments when it comes to helping them build comfort adopting new ways of working.

Coaching is one tool that might be supportive when it comes to helping your organisation deliver more successful change.  But what if your change program is impacting thousands of people.  Can coaching be applied at scale?

My guest on The New Way podcast this week is Colin Beattie.  Colin is an executive team and leadership coach who, over the past 20 years, has worked with some of Australia’s highest profile organisations.  And he’s also one of the founders of an HR Tech company that has recently realised a coach-in-your-pocket app called The People Spot.

In this episode, we explore so many interesting topics.  We cover everything from what coaching is, how coaching can help people through change, whether or not it’s possible to deploy coaching effectively at scale to support organisational transformation, and a whole lot more.

I especially loved Colin’s take on the difference between MOMENTS and EVENTS, and why as change leaders we need to consider both.

This episode is an invitation to think about what it would take to really support your people through change.  I know you’re going to enjoy this one!

Listen in now.

TOPICS DISCUSSED AND WHERE TO FIND THEM:

[4:05]: Coaching is a tool that can be useful for change leaders to consider that isn’t currently on their minds.

[4:36]: Coaching is a tool, not a role. It’s a choice to make when you can see the employees have the potential to work through the change. Coaching is a way to move through the barriers facing employees, such as anxiety, and concern.

[6:15]: Coaching is goal-based and performance-based. Colin recommends ‘The Inner Game of Tennis: The Ultimate Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Performance’ by W. Timothy Gallwey. Humans have incredible potential but build barriers around confidence, imposter syndrome, doubt etc.

[7:33]: Two things that make a difference are listening and listening without judgement.

[8:31]: Coaching is dynamic and can be done in different ways.

[9:20]: A third party doesn’t mean paying a fortune for an executive coach, it could just mean a peer from a different group.

[10:30]: Colin started coaching when coaching wasn’t legitimised. Currently, we’re often still looking at coaching in an event or programmed way.

[11:20]: You don’t have to use the word ‘coaching’, Colin talks about unlocking a team’s potential through creating space for them.

[13:06]: The People Spot is a coach in your pocket for all employees (not just leaders). This app gives you the ability to take action, find answers, process, and asks the right questions a coach would ask.

[16:30]: Coaching should be an experiment, try, learn, try again, deepen. It’s a choose your own adventure story. Executive coaches will meet with you 10 times in short doses (the app recreates this).

[17:30]: Colin describes the difference between a moment and an event. An event is something that is done to us and is significant but most of us live day by day in the moment. The organisations that will move fastest will enable people to deal with the moments rather than wait for the event.

[20:08]: Humans thrive by the choices they make every day. How do we empower our people to make a different decision every day? The People Spot app empowers everyone at the same time.

[23:25]: Where to find and connect with Colin.
